Keeping active with karate, triathlons, and relays
9/1/2009 3:44 PM
By: Veronica Castelo

The North American Sport Karate Association held their Lone Star Open Tournament in Austin this past weekend. Fighters from all over the world came into town to compete for more
than $16,000 in prize money at the Renaissance Hotel.

The Austin Society of Karate hosted the event. The organization provides martial arts training to people throughout the greater Austin-metro area including Travis, Caldwell, Milam and Williamson counties.

Lady Bird Lake is usually off limits but not on Monday. The 2009 Austin Triathlon will be held on Labor Day at Auditorium Shores.
It's a new favorite among Austin triathletes as they swim, bike and run throughout the city.

The Austin Triathlon offers an Olympic distance course and a sprint course. The sprint course includes a 700 meter swim, 27 km bike, and 5 km run. The Olympic distance includes a 1500 meter swim, 40 km bike, and a 10 km run.

All slots are filled but everyone is encouraged to take to the streets and cheer on their favorite athletes.

For those who would rather forego the swim and bike workout, the Silicon Labs Austin Marathon Relay provides an opportunity for weekend runners and record breakers to enjoy the same race.

Teams of 5 will compete against 2000 others runners taking part in the relay on September 27th. Teams will knock out a 12k, two 10ks and two 5ks.

The relay is the second largest stand-alone marathon relay event in the country. The event supports the Junior Achievement Program.

The City of Austin plans to have the Nueces Bike Boulevard opened by late spring. The boulevard would be a multi-use path where car traffic is discouraged. How do you feel about this?
I think this is a great idea, we need more roads like this
I think it needs more public input
