Acevedo: 'We've all lost' in Sanders case
11/6/2009 8:45 PM
By: Reagan Hackleman

Nathaniel Sanders
One APD officer is suspended and another is fired in connection with the May 11 shooting of 18-year-old Nathaniel Sanders.

Six months after Austin Police Officer Leonardo Quintana shot and killed Sanders in East Austin, Austin's Police Chief Art Acevedo announced his punishment.

Quintana was given a 15 day suspension because he failed to turn on his dash cam during the incident.

He is not undergoing any formal punishment for killing Nathaniel Sanders nor is he in trouble for shooting and wounding Sir Lawrence Smith, who was in the car with Sanders.

Many in Austin's African-American community are not happy with the punishment.

A busy week for APD

News 8’s Reagan Hackleman has more on the community’s reaction to Quintana’s 15 day suspension.

"Right now the Austin Police officers in our community, they are really not respected until they start doing the right thing," Anthony Walker with The New Black Panthers said.

Before Acevedo made his decision, a citizen review panel recommended suspending Quintana for at least 90 days.

The man in charge of that panel is Austin's Police Monitor Cliff Brown.

Brown thinks an opportunity was missed because no wrong doing aside from the dash cam was recognized by the chief.

"Finding and recognizing when there are problems and being able to move and correct those problems and grow from those problems. If you don't acknowledge, then I don't think there can be any movement or growth," Brown said.

On Thursday Acevedo also fired an internal affairs officer because of an email he sent out that said the department should use Sanders as a scapegoat.

Austin's Police Chief Art Acevedo announced his punishment for Quintana Wednesday.
"Nobody in this incident won. Officer Quintana did not win. The Sanders family has lost, we've all lost," Acevedo said.

Although an official punishment has been set forth, this situation is far from over.

Some community members in East Austin have expressed desires to take the case to federal court.

The City of Austin plans to have the Nueces Bike Boulevard opened by late spring. The boulevard would be a multi-use path where car traffic is discouraged. How do you feel about this?
I think this is a great idea, we need more roads like this
I think it needs more public input
