Gov. Rick Perry is throwing his support behind a House resolution that would reaffirm states' rights under the 10th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.
He said Texas is in far better economic shape than the federal government, and that interference from Washington could only hurt the state.
"I believe the federal government has become oppressive," Perry said. "It's become oppressive in its size, its intrusion into the lives of its citizens and its interference with the affairs of our state."
One supporter of the resolution compared the current relationship between the Texas and federal governments to a bad marriage.
"Where one spouse has now become unfaithful to the vows, and the treaties, and the promises it made when they first joined," Lowanna Munden, of the Texas Nationalist Movement, said.
Georgetown Republican Dan Gattis is among the representatives who authored the resolution.
