Esther Chung, the Asian American Neighborhood liaison said the exhibit is about preserving local history and sharing it.
"It's personal stories of local Austinites who came from Vietnam. They're making so many constributions to our city and so to learn more about that you can come out and view all the panels," she said.
The exhibit and reception are free and open to the public. The exhibit will be on display from Feb. 21 to July 17, located at the Austin History Center, 810 Guadalupe.
According to the Austin History Center Web site, Vietnamese Americans are fast becoming the largest Asian American population in Austin. Many are drawn to this city for its warm climate, job opportunities, plentiful resources, and supportive community. As a result, hundreds of Vietnamese-owned businesses have sprouted up all over town and added tremendous economic growth to our city. Also, there are now many organizations, programs, and religious institutions that exist to serve this growing population.
The Austin History Center and the Austin Public Library is looking for historical documents and other records of Asian Americans in Austin and Travis County. This includes any individual, family, business, organization, or entity that represents Asian heritage. The intent is to collect and preserve materials related to the history of Asian Americans in the local community for research purposes.
Collection areas include: architectural archives, biography files, photographs, maps, periodicals, recordings, books, published documents and many others.
