There are now more emergency room doctors in the state of Texas than ever before, according to a group of physicians at the Texas Capitol Tuesday.
Physicians credited the increase on a tort reform bill passed in 2003. The bill limited the amount of money a person could sue for in the event of malpractice.
Lawmakers said this law has not only helped Texans to hold onto their doctors, but it has attracted new ones as well. Sponsors of the bill said if there changes were to be made to the bill, it could be disastrous for the medical community.
"Every legislative session looks at changes in legislation," Sen. Troy Fraser (R-Belton) said. "And I think the message this group is trying to see, to project is, 'This law is not broken. This law is working. Let's leave this one in place.'"
The law limits the amount of money that could be awarded in a malpractice suit to $250,000 dollars.
