A traveling carnival in North Austin is closed after a 9-year-old girl died on one of the rides.
Monday evening, Austin police investigators were at the carnival site near Cameron Road and U.S. Highway 290 looking at the ride known as Sizzler.
Police said Fatima Cervantes, 9, suffered major head trauma after falling off around 9:30 p.m. Sunday. She was taken to Children's Hospital where she later died.
Police believe her death was an accident, but the carnival has been closed.
The owner of the carnival, Pat Crabtree of Crabtree Amusements said he's shocked by the accident. In the 20-plus years his family has operated the carnival, they've never had an accident like this, he said.

According to permits posted at the carnival, Crabtree Amusements and the Sizzler are in compliance with state requirements.
Though the city of Austin doesn't require a local inspection carnival operators are required to have insurance: $100,000 worth of liability and $350,000 to cover an accident.
Citing the ongoing investigation, Austin police aren't commenting about the accident.
