'Real World Austin' finally over
11/22/2005 9:26 PM
By: James Keith

For the last five months, people have seen Austin through the eyes of MTV's The Real World.

The final episode aired Tuesday, though cast and crew members wrapped up production here earlier this summer.

So, now that it's all done, the reviews are coming in.

"I thought it was horrible. I thought it was the worst Real World I've ever seen in my life," fan Sasha Still said.

"I thought it was pretty boring. All they did was go downtown," show fan Allison Key said.

Most people agree, the show wasn't the most interesting.

But city leaders say despite the content, it was a success.

"I think it did show Austin in a pretty positive light. We saw a lot of beauty shots, the skyline and Mount Bonnell," Gary Bond, Austin Film Office Director for the Austin Convention and Visitors Bureau said.

More importantly, the city's film industry has seen a boost in business, he said.

'Real World' ends

The final episode of the Austin's 'Real World' aired Tuesday.

Twenty feature film and television shows have came to town since The Real World. Not to mention, close to $20 million worth of free media exposure is expected as a result of the show's five-month run.

"It did bring a focus to Austin that we did hope for and kind of anticipated," Bond said.

Fans of the series just hope Austin's not remembered as a "bar town" and nothing else.

"There is a lot of other things we do to have a good time and it's not just solely based between Fourth and Sixth streets downtown," show fan Sarah Hawthorne said.

MTV says it plans to show reruns of the show over the next few months. Taping for the next season is underway in Key West, Fla.

The house used in the show at 3rd and San Jacinto streets will soon become a Mexican restaurant and a photography store.

The City of Austin plans to have the Nueces Bike Boulevard opened by late spring. The boulevard would be a multi-use path where car traffic is discouraged. How do you feel about this?
I think this is a great idea, we need more roads like this
I think it needs more public input
I don’t think this is a good idea
