While students are on summer vacation the Austin Independent School District has its share of assignments to complete. Some campuses are being expanded or renovated and others will open for the first time next month.
The construction projects were funded by a $519.5 million bond approved two years ago.
Clayton Elementary will open in the Circle C neighborhood of Southwest Austin in August. Students and parents are invited to tour the school and meet teachers on Aug. 13.
Clayton is one of the two new schools opening in the district this fall. Perez Elementary will open on Pleasant Valley in Southeast Austin. The school still needs bilingual special education teachers.

AISD construction manager Curt Shaw said the summer has been a productive one for the school system. By January 2007, Travis High School will have a new theater that’s double the size of the existing auditorium.
"We are going to be doing a lot of good to our existing facilities and to take care of the growth we have in the school district," he said.
Even with all of the construction in the works for Austin schools, the district is already looking ahead.
“I think the superintendent has identified some needs at the early childhood level. We are really crowded and have had a lot of growth at the pre-k and kindergarten level. I think the superintendent may want to consider a bond issue to meet those needs," Shaw said.
In total AISD will get eight new schools over the next five years from the bond money. Shaw adds that all construction is on schedule and will be complete by the first day of class on Aug. 15.
AISD already broke ground on Gus Garcia Middle School and Overton Elementary School, which are scheduled to open in August 2007.
