If you read one book this summer, the mayor hopes it will be Writing Austin's Lives.
Mayor Will Wynn has placed the collection of short stories on his summer reading list.
This fall you can expect discussion groups held all over town, from some hometown celebrities like former Governor Ann Richards.
The University of Texas Humanities Institute published the essays from a project it began two years ago. The institute collected more than 800 stories, 127 of which can be found in the book.
"Surely you know someone who knows someone in this book,” Sylvia Gale of UT’s Humanities Institute said. “And even if you don't, it's worth reading because it will change your perspective on this city you think you know pretty well.”
Gale said the mayor picked "Writing Austin's Lives" instead of a more famous book because he felt it was important for readers to see our city from different perspectives.
Nearly 4,000 copies of the book have been sold. News 8 Austin has featured many of the stories from the book in a special series.
