Oak trees are causing pesky problems this spring 4/7/2005 7:01 PM By: Allison Toepperwein | Williamson & Bell County Bureau Chief
You've seen them, crawling in your hair, inching down your car.
"They come stringing down invisible silk threads and are alarming to people," businessowner Jerry Pulley said.
The oak leaf rollers are back again this year. While they're harmless to people and will eventually turn into a moth, they can eat your oak trees up.
"This happens a couple or three years in a row, the trees are weaker and subject to fungal infections, less resistant to the boring insect problems that occur later in the year," Pulley said.
Pulley's business, the Tree Clinic, is busy this spring spraying trees to kill off the inch worms. Their infestation is cyclical. After this year you might not see them again for 10 years.
"A fairly significant infestation of those this year. Not as much as last year," Pulley said.
Along with bugs, oaks are also causing a green film of pollen to be found all over Central Texas.

Spring is here Oak leaf rollers and allergies mean spring has arrived in Central Texas.
Oaks are causing people to sneeze and blow their nose, and of course rub those itchy, watery eyes. And if any of those symptoms sound like yours it may be time to see an allergist.
"We're getting a lot of new patients calling for appointments because their allergies are pretty severe," Austin Allergy Associates Dr. Dennis Dyer said.
And relief seems to be very distant. After oak pollen season is over, then comes pecan and grass season.
"Right now it's a good idea not to be driving around with the windows open or with the windows open in your house," Dyer said.
Dyer also advises to take nasal steroids and antihistamines regularly instead of intermittently to avoid aggravating your allergies.
