Chief Acevedo declines retention offer from city
Austin City Manager Marc Ott said city officials made a retention offer to keep Art Acevedo as Austin's police chief. However, the chief declined to commit, saying he would continue to pursue the job as Dallas' chief.

Austin starts plan to become no-kill city
The Austin city council passed a plan Thursday that should help the city decrease the number of animals that are euthanized. The plan allows for off-site adoptions through a non-profit group and sets a moratorium on killing while there are empty cages.

Texas State Board of Education debates social studies
A topic the State Board of Education spent most of Thursday morning debating was an argument about three names. Some wanted to include names of minorities who received the Medal of Honor in world history curriculum, and others said the names weren't necessary.

Military spouses learn fate of tuition assistance program
Last month, the Department of Defense placed a hold on a tuition assistance program for military spouses due to high demand. Thursday, they announced they would no longer receive applications for the program, but those already enrolled would continue to receive benefits this semester.

Testing accuracy: 'Smart meter' v. traditional meter
