Students young and less young, from kindergarten to high school, took part in A Legacy of Giving's first Day of Service for the year Wednesday.
A Legacy of Giving helps teach students about donating, volunteering and helping those in need.
Twenty schools joined the local nonprofit to spread the word about Coats for Kids, a food and clothing drive for the Capital Area Food Bank and the Junior League of Austin.
Organizers said A Legacy of Giving is not only charitable, but also a learning experience.
"We teach the word 'philanthropy.' It's a big word, but it's not too big for even the smallest of children to understand," Linda Brucker, with A Legacy of Giving, said.
Organizers hope to bring in 50,000 pounds of food and 2,000 coats. All Austin area Jack Brown Cleaners will take coats through Dec. 2. The coats will be distributed Dec. 5.
