Some low-income Austin families will enjoy a Thanksgiving dinner this year, complete with turkey and all the fixings.
More than 150 volunteers helped make El Buen Samaritano Episcopal Mission's Annual Hands for Hope Thanksgiving Event possible. Pre-registered families received a turkey and several other items to complete their holiday meal.
The mission's executive director, Victor Azios, said it is a chance for community members to help one another.
"It's that opportunity to build stronger networks and stronger neighborhoods in the community by sharing abundance and by making sure that people don't go without," Azios said.
The mission says it has seen a 55 percent increase in food assistance requests in the past year.
During this year's Thanksgiving event, the mission is handing out 800 turkeys.
