The third annual Operation Turkey Day offered troops and their families at Fort Hood a Thanksgiving meal Saturday.
Soldiers and community leaders said the event is a nice change of pace after the recent shootings on the post.
"Well it's certainly something to remind you that life does go on and you can still enjoy the good things in life. And it's a reminder to say that I think the camaraderie that the soldiers have is still very plain to see," James Culbreth with the 4th Combat Aviation Brigade said.
From traditional Thanksgiving food to enchiladas, more than 2,000 soldiers participated in Operation Turkey Day.
"It's time to get the attention off. Laugh. Eat all you want till you fall away from the table like everyone does at Thanksgiving," Texas Rep. John Carter said.
Feeding the soldiers took over 500 pounds of food, which was donated and prepared by Z'Tejas in Austin.
