Austin Community College's Rio Grande campus recently opened a new 'green' parking garage.
The Director of Environmental Stewardship for ACC, Andy Kim, and his associates opened the doors on the new project for the fall semester.
"As much as 80 to 90 percent of the materials were diverted from the landfill for reuse and recycling," Kim said. "Also, 90 percent of the material for this garage came from Texas, reducing the carbon footprint and also emissions from the transportation."

Forty percent of the building is made out of recycled material. It also has lighter colored concrete and native plants, which helps reduce the heat island effect.
"We reduced up to 80 percent of the irrigation and water usage compared to conventional irrigation," Kim said. "This drastically reduces the building's water consumption."
