Local DJ Barry Carew was at Fire Base Bennett in northern Iraq, when he heard word about the mass shootings at Fort Hood that killed 13 and wounded 30 more.
Carew was on an entertainment tour with United Service Organizations, or USO, in an effort to boost morale for troops overseas.
When Sgt. Maj. David Betts heard Carew was from the Killeen area, he ordered soldiers to pull down the flag flying over the base.

Betts told Carew to take the flag to Fort Hood and remind everyone there that Fire Base Bennett supports them.
Soldiers at the fire base captured the whole thing on Carew's flip-camera.
"It really struck a chord in me," Carew said. "I'm still getting chills when I think about the scenario because it really places a heavy responsibility, I thought, on my heart and in my hands to make sure this happened."
