The man who terrorized the Washington DC area for three weeks in 2002 has been put to death.

John Allen Muhammad was accused of killing 10 people in a shooting rampage across Washington, Virginia, and Maryland.

Despite a string of appeals, Virginia governor Tim Kaine denied his request for clemency.

He was executed by lethal injection for the murder of Dean Harold Meyers at a gas station during the killing spree.

Muhammad's teenage accomplice, Lee Boyd Malvo, is serving a life sentence in a Virginia prison.
