A wreck in Del Valle early Saturday morning left one person dead and at least three others injured.

The accident occurred just after midnight about four miles east of Austin on Elroy Road between Larkdale Street and Martin Lane.

The Department of Public Safety said five people were heading southbound in a Honda on Elroy Road when the driver swerved to avoid hitting an animal and crashed into a tree.

The driver, 18-year-old Jose Manual Henriquez of Del Valle, was pronounced dead on the scene. He was not wearing a seatbelt.

Three of his passengers were taken to the hospital in serious condition.

According to investigators, a fifth person in the vehicle fled the scene. DPS said it is not unusual for people in these situations to panic and run.

So far nothing suggests charges will be filed against anyone involved.
