An accident involving a jogger and vehicle Friday evening has Austin's running community on high alert.
Police said as 21-year-old Brianna Becker was jogging, she was hit by a vehicle leaving a state parking garage near West 15th Street and Colorado Street.
She died later that evening.
Some runners hope this tragedy drives a lesson home for both runners and motorists.
Austin's running community is a culture all its own. Whether it's another race, or just a jog, thousands pound the pavement, or dirt daily.
Where runners choose to run depends on them.
"I stick to the trails. I'm not running on roads generally. That's what probably keeps me safe," runner Richard Viktorin said.
But like a lot of runners, Becker, a senior at UT, ran the neighborhoods and downtown area close to her Austin home.
Dustin Matocha met Becker a year and a half ago at UT. They were also fellow Young Conservatives of Texas members.

"She loved running. It was her release from the stress of school and work and all that," Matocha said.
Police said Friday evening Becker couldn't clear a car in time and was killed running on the sidewalk.
Matocha said she was set to take the law school entrance exam known as the LSAT Saturday.
"This was her last jog to get rid of some stress before the next morning," Matocha said.
Paul Carrozza is the owner of RunTex.
"Running is such an integral part of our local culture that obviously these tragedies get your attention," Carrozza said. "And they can help other people be safe because they create a new awareness for the fact that two things can't be at the same place at the same time."
He said he hopes more drivers and runners will look both ways and look again.
"If you're in an urban setting, stay very aware and assume the car is not going to see you and don't take the right of way. Let the car go," he said.
Becker's death brings together a community of runners, made a bit more aware of their surroundings after hearing about her accident.
"My heart goes out to the parents of the young lady killed," Viktorin said.
Becker, who came to Austin from Houston, was a philosophy and government major at UT.
She also worked on the campaign for Texas State Comptroller Susan Combs.
