Former Austin City Council member and businessman Lowell Lebermann died Thursday in Aspen, Colo.
Lebermann served on the council from 1971-1977.
In addition, he served on the University of Texas Board of Regents from 1993-1999, appointed by Gov. Ann Richards.
Lebermann was a businessman and philanthropist, involved in various charities and the owner of Centex Beverage.
Former Lt. Gov. Ben Barnes, who calls himself a close friend of Lebermann's, issued the following statement:
“Lowell was one of the most compassionate, caring, concerned citizens I’ve ever known. He was always willing and able to do something for someone else. The Austin community, the university and our state has lost one its greatest supporters.”
