Loud noises from fireworks can be very frightening for most pets.
During the Fourth of July holiday, animal shelters notice an increase in the number of pets that get out, run away or get lost.
"They get very scared by all the cracks and pops of fireworks, and not just the big ones downtown, but especially all the little ones, the firecrackers and the bottle rockets that go off around the house. They are terrified of that," Ian Hallett, with the City of Austin Animal Control, said. "A lot of animals that normally stay in their yard or stay in their house, when they are that terrified, will try to escape."
To make sure your pet is as comfortable as possible, keep your pet indoors and turn on the radio or TV to disguise the noise outside.
It's also important to make sure your pet is wearing proper identification tags, just in case.
