Marines say 1 killed in new Afghanistan offensive

CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. -- The Marine Corps said one Marine has been killed in fighting in southern Afghanistan during a major offensive against the Taliban.

Capt. William Pelletier said the Marine died Thursday during the fighting along the Helmand River valley. The victim wasn't immediately identified.

Pelletier also said several others were injured or wounded but didn't have numbers.

The Marines said about 4,000 troops, many from Camp Lejeune, N.C., were involved in the offensive.

An Amber Alert has been issued for Angela Rodriguez. She is 14 years old, 5-feet-1 inch tall, has black hair, brown eyes and weighs about 140 pounds. She was last seen with Joaquin Garcia.

Garcia was driving a 1999 blue-green Chevrolet Malibu four-door, with Texas license plate LHF502.

Anybody with information on this child is asked to contact the San Jacinto County Sheriff's Office at (936) 653-4367.
