Fire kills 1 woman in Bastrop County
7/2/2009 9:49 AM
By: News 8 Austin Staff

Dry conditions make the threat of fire even greater during the 4th of July holiday.
Officials said a woman died in her travel trailer home on Ponderosa Loop in Bastrop County early Thursday morning.

The Bastrop and Blue Bonnett Acres fire units arrived at 2:49 a.m., but the travel trailer was already fully engulfed.

After extinguishing the flames, the remains of an unidentified human body were found.

The Bastrop County Sheriff's Department, with the assistance of the State Fire Marshal's Office, is investigating and will release more details as they become available.

The cause of the fire as well as the victim's name has not been released at this time.

News 8's Jennifer Borget found out what they're doing now to protect themselves.

Neighbors said they're doing what they can to keep this from happening to them.

"Keep the pine needles away from the house, we water quite a bit, really that's about it,” Bastrop resident Darrin Waid said. “I've got smoke detectors, fire alarms in the house that would be the main thing."

Dean Pahlow works at a tree farm in Bastrop, not far from the house fire last weekend that killed a couple in their 80s.

He said while seclusion is a nice reason to live in the area, it can also be a detriment.

"As dry as it is, it just spreads real fast," he said. "If there's a fire at a house you may not know until two or three houses went down."

He said he doesn't see house fires like this often. And he hopes, although the Fourth of July holiday is around the corner, these fires won't be a continuing trend.

"I think people are aware, some people are just careless and some people don't care, I think it's a combination of things," Pahlow said.

That combination of things is keeping volunteer firefighters working around the clock.

The City of Austin plans to have the Nueces Bike Boulevard opened by late spring. The boulevard would be a multi-use path where car traffic is discouraged. How do you feel about this?
I think this is a great idea, we need more roads like this
I think it needs more public input
I don’t think this is a good idea
