The scene began to clear just before noon following a tension-filled morning due to an officer-involved shooting in East Austin Monday.
The incident, which left an 18-year-old dead, took place at an apartment complex at the 6400 block of Springdale Road.
Police Chief Art Acevedo said police were patrolling the area at the Walnut Creek Apartments around 5 a.m., when they saw a vehicle matching the description of a car possibly involved in a Saturday taxicab robbery. Officers were also informed this vehicle was involved in shots fired in the area, Acevedo said.

There were three people in the champagne-colored Mercedes Benz station wagon when officers approached. Police were able to detain and secure the driver.
According to police, the other two people were asleep in the back of the station wagon. Officers attempted to wake up one of the people, an 18-year-old male. When he woke up, officers saw him make a “furtive movement for” a weapon in his waistband, Acevedo said.
Acevedo said the officer then fired shots that killed the 18-year-old male at the scene. The third male woke and approached the officer, and the officer fired at him. He was taken to the hospital but is in stable condition but no further details were released.
Acevedo said police have made contact with the victim’s father.
“Obviously, any time there is a loss of life, our hearts go out to the family,” he said.
The driver is cooperating with police and is being interviewed at this time. Police said witnesses are also cooperating with police and encourage anyone else who has information to come forward.
Police also recovered a van wanted in the taxicab shootings.
Consistent with police policy the officer involved in the shooting will be placed on leave pending the results of the investigation.
The incident shut down Springdale Road and neighbors and nearby residents approached the area with questions and concerns.
Some said they do not believe the shooting needed to occur.
As of 10:15 a.m., extra police were on the scene and wearing protective riot gear as there were reports of rock throwing.
About an hour later, some police began leaving the scene while many concerned neighbors lingered. All are trying to decipher exactly what happened Monday morning.
Castelo continues her reporting from the scene and will bring more information as it becomes available.
Austin police will be holding a press conference at 2 p.m., concerning the shooting.
