When firefighters arrived at the scene of a two-alarm fire in Del Valle Monday, flames were coming up through the floor of a home.
Because of the rural location, the nearest hydrant was about a mile away. Tankers had to haul water back and forth, and that wasn't the only challenge for crews.
"In this particular case, we had to find alternative access points into the structure," Travis County Fire Rescue Chief Ken Bailey said. "Because of the weight limit our apparatus was actually cracking the main entry, the culvert, we were unable to get through on the second pass."
Two people were home at the time, but both got out unharmed. The home, however, is deemed a total loss.
