An Austin holiday tradition will light up the skies beginning this weekend.
On Sunday the flip of a switch will illuminate the 155 feet tall Zilker Tree with more than 3,300 glowing lights.
The tree lighting is an Austin tradition that dates back to the 1960s. The Zilker Park Tree Lighting is an annual event that ushers in the Holiday season and marks the opening (a week later) of the Trail of Lights Festival. A ceremony will be held Sunday night beginning at 6 p.m. Parking will be available at Zilker Park. The tree will remain lit through New Year's Eve.
The nearby Trail of Lights opens up to the public next weekend and will run each night from December 14-23.
And in Cedar Park, there might be a little competition going on among the children to determine who will light the city's Christmas tree Friday night.
A coloring contest for kindergarten and first graders will determine who gets to light the city's Christmas tree.
Cedar Park's 10th annual tree lighting will start at 6:30 p.m. in Heritage Oak Park.
More than 50,000 lights adorn one of the city's largest Live Oak trees. Folks can enjoy caroling, carriage rides, and a Yule fire.
