Students call Austinite Richard Garriott in space Sunday morning.

A few lucky students had the opportunity to call space Sunday morning.

Students from the Liberal Arts and Science Academy at LBJ High School made contact with the International Space Station.

The students spoke via amateur radio with game developer Richard Garriott.

Garriott is an Austinite and only the sixth paying space traveler.

Teacher Ronny Risinger said the activity truly thrilled his students.

"It takes a lot to excite kids these days with Internet and cell phones, but when you tell kids you're gonna talk directly to the space station from our high school, with our own equipment, they're very excited," he said.

Student Jason Pan said it was an unbelievable experience.

"Just come here and talk to an astronaut … it's just unbelievable," he said. "Like you can't even really think about it. It's just like something you can experience. I don't know .. don't really have any words for it."

Part of Garriott's mission to space is to encourage student interest in science and technology through contact by amateur radio.
