The fate of the Bat Festival lingers in an air of uncertainty.
The festival's promoter was not able to get the needed signatures from nearby businesses to get a permit to hold the event, so he asked council to waive the requirement, but the Austin City Council decided to postpone the decision.
Council members Randi Shade, Lee Leffingwell and Mayor Will Wynn said they would not approve the waiver, due to the fact that the festival would close down a major road for two days on the same weekend as UT's home-opening football game.
Council Member Mike Martinez asked the council to postpone a decision for two weeks.
"I postponed it today because I felt that they should at least make a good faith effort to try and mitigate some of the impact on the businesses," Martinez said.
If they can't, Martinez said the festival will need to find a new place to hold the event.
Festival promoters anticipate attendance at the two-day event to reach roughly 30,000 people.
This year's festival is scheduled for August 30 and 31.
