Austin Energy making progress, restoring electricity
Updated: 5/16/2008 6:27 AM
By: News 8 Austin Staff

Austin Energy crews should have power restored to residents Saturday.
Austin Energy projects it could be Saturday mid-morning before power is restored to all customers.

After Wednesday's overnight storm hit Austin, about 40,000 Austin Energy customers were without power by 1 a.m. Thursday.

As of 6:30 a.m. Friday, an estimated 3,000 Austin Energy customers were without power, and an estimated 260 locations were still in need of repair. So far, repairs have been made at more than 200 locations since the storm began.

"We've got every single crew working, and they will be working non-stop, and we'll have crews working as long as it takes until every customer has power again," Ed Clark with Austin Energy said.

About 10,000 residents were without power as of 1 p.m. Thursday.
For residents with power outages, Clark said they need to report it to the energy company in order to ensure assistance.

"Your problem may be different than the problem that effects the entire block," he said. "So you assume somebody called, you see trucks are working, the power comes on for some customers, but your lights aren't back on, and they're not back on because your address is not in the system."

The most affected area is bounded by Ben White Boulevard to the South, Loop 360 to the West, Hwy. 183 to the North and Hwy. 183 to the east.

Many traffic lights throughout the city were still out, as of Thursday afternoon.

Traffic lights on Enfield were still off after 12 hours.
According to Austin Energy , 34 repair and 20 tree trimming crews were in service Thursday and will continue to work into the evening hours. Another 17 crews will returned to work Thursday evening, with 30-33 crews working Friday.

Austin Energy linemen and restoration coordinators routinely work 16-hour shifts during major outages.

The City of Austin and the Red Cross opened a shelter at the Parque Zaragoza Recreation Center, 2608 Gonzales, for those affected by power outages. The shelter will operate through Saturday.

The city is also setting up water and ice stations in strategic locations, and will get detailed informational flyers out Thursday evening to fire stations in heavily affected areas.
