Students from the University of Texas Law School are collecting toys for children held at a Central Texas immigration detention center.
The T. Don Hutto Family Residential Facility is a former prison in Taylor where non-criminal immigrant families are held while their cases are processed.
At times, children have made up half of the detainees.
Students from the Immigration Clinic, the Women's Law Caucus, and the Catholic Law Students Association plan to collect toys through today.
People who want to contribute, can bring new unwrapped toys in the original packaging to the Susman Godfrey Atrium at the Law School.
The groups plan to deliver them tomorrow to the Hutto facility.
Law student Cristina Rodriguez says the toys can ensure proper development and make the children's stay in detention a little more tolerable.
A federal judge approved a lawsuit settlement earlier this year calling for changes at the Hutto facility. Those changes include adding a full-time pediatrician and preventing children from being disciplined by threatening to separate them from their families.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has always contended residents at the facility are treated with dignity and respect.
