Home invasion suspect dies at scene
8/9/2007 10:12 AM
By: News 8 Austin Staff

The 13200 block of Rochester Lane in Northeast Austin
A man involved in an attempted home invasion in Northeast Austin died at the scene once police had taken him into custody.

Police say several people broke into a home in the 13200 block of Rochester Lane, near East Howard and Parmer Lane. There, officers say one resident fought off one of the suspects, who later died from a head injury.

Police responded to a 911 call about a robbery at 12:30 a.m. There were five adults and two children in the home at the time. During the robbery, one of the suspects shot a resident in the arm, who was later taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The suspects then ran out of the house. When officers arrived, a police dog found a 350-pound man conscious but lying face down in a yard a few doors away. He was taken into custody without incident.

Although he was alert and conscious when taken into custody, police said he had visible injuries to his head. Officers called EMS, but the suspect suddenly lost consciousness and stopped breathing before EMS arrived.

Officers at the scene administered CPR and used a defibrillator, but were unable to resuscitate him. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Everyone else inside the home, including two children, were not hurt. The children have been placed with relatives during the investigation.

Police are still looking for two or three suspects. Anyone with information should call the Homicide tip line at (512) 477-3588 or CrimeStoppers at (512) 472-8477.
