Austin's BYOB businesses could soon be regulated, forcing them to close their doors earlier and post guards.
The Austin City Council has drafted an ordinance that would require the businesses to have a permit if they allowed patrons to bring in their own alcohol.
To get a permit, business owners will have to pay a fee and agree to certain guidelines. The business must close by 2:15 a.m., no alcohol can be allowed in the parking lot and security guards must be present.
Councilmember Sheryl Cole says the ordinance is a response to a growing concerns.
"We've been concerned about citizen's public safety. The neighborhoods complained about the noise, and anytime you're talking about public safety I think it's very important that the city decides to act," Cole said.
Cole says the hope is that closing the businesses earlier will cut down on neighborhood noise.
It would be a class C misdemeanor if a BYOB business operates without a permit. The ordinance will be discussed at the Aug. 9 council meeting.
