A jury acquitted two Austin Police Department officers charged with official oppression.
Officer Christopher Gray got his job back Friday after the jury's verdict was read. Gray and William Heilman, who is no longer an APD officer, were charged after getting violent while detaining Ramon Hernandez.
Hernandez was running from the officers during an incident in
September. He struggled with the officers and ended with injuries after being hit by police.
The jury watched a videotape of the incident that showed the officers punching Hernandez.
Hernandez felt that force was not justified.
"I wasn't complying with his commands, but then again, that doesn't justify for them beating on me because they could have easily just held me there and just waited 'til help arrived," Hernandez said.
Police advocates say the video did not reveal Hernandez attempting to take Heilman's gun.
Hernandez was a "dangerous subject," the Austin Police Association said.
"Unfortunate as the situation is when we have to use violence to get people under control the officers that day saved their lives and also Mr. Hernandez' life," APA President Mike Sheffield said.
Gray has been suspended without pay since the incident. He's now on restricted duty with pay while the department finishes
up its own review of the incident.
Heilman quit the police department in October.
A third officer also faces charge. Joel Follmer's trial date has not been set.
