AMD, Austin, S.O.S. await lawsuit ruling
3/28/2006 9:36 PM
By: Hermelinda Vargas

Advanced Micro Devices hopes to build a new facility at the corner of Southwest Parkway and William Cannon Drive in Southwest Austin, on part of the Barton Creek Watershed.

The Save Our Springs Alliance sued the city of Austin to block AMD's new office campus.

While S.O.S. waits for a ruling in the lawsuit, expected Wednesday, they'll stay mum.

"A key claim in our lawsuit is that they're building a major office center, and so with that change from retail to office, it's clearly a different project," S.O.S. director Bill Bunch said when the lawsuit was originally filed.

In other words, S.O.S. claims the city improperly grandfathered AMD's project, and, in effect, violated its own Save Our Springs Ordinance. The city says that is not true.

A ruling is expected on the S.O.S. lawsuit filed against the city over AMD's new campus.

AMD doesn't expect the legal action to delay construction, AMD's Craig Garcia said.

"We kind of view it as part of the due process that we have to go through to complete the process. We don't expect that to deter our plans at all. We fully expect the city will prevail," Garcia said.

Those in favor of AMD's expansion say the judge's decision will not only impact the company; in many ways, it will impact the future of Austin.

The AMD project can set an example for the growth of other industries in Austin; in particular the film, video game, and high-technology industries, Austin City Council member Brewster McCracken said.

The S.O.S. worries about setting a precedent. They think the AMD deal opens up sensitive areas to future development.

The City of Austin plans to have the Nueces Bike Boulevard opened by late spring. The boulevard would be a multi-use path where car traffic is discouraged. How do you feel about this?
I think this is a great idea, we need more roads like this
