This New Year's bang may be a whisper 12/21/2005 9:16 AM By: Allison Toepperwein | Williamson & Bell County Bureau Chief
Fireworks stands were popping open across Central Texas on Tuesday to get people thinking about New Year's Eve.
Josh Knolhoff and his girlfriend are working in their second fireworks stand. It opened as three quarters of the state is in a burn ban, including all of Central Texas.
Along with burn bans, many counties restrict aerial fireworks, which are rockets on a stick, and any fireworks with a fin. All but Gillespie County is included in that ban.

The Texas Interagency Coordination Center (TICC) has a burn ban map by county on its Web site.
"It takes away all of our rockets. But, this is the same way that it was when we did it two years ago, so I don't know that we'll see a difference with having rockets or not," Knolhoff said.
Rockets are more unpredictable in the direction they fly. By restricting them, Texas Fire Marshall Paul Maldonado said it also restricts injuries.
"Every year we see numerous injuries so I would issue caution to adults to make sure you're accompanying children," Maldonado said.

Burn ban Fireworks stands are beginning to open but most of the state is under a burn ban.
Fireworks are to blame for this fire that destroyed the Austin Lumber Company on New Year's Eve in 2004. It caused more than $1 million worth of property damage and displaced residents of a neighboring home.
"There can be fines and you can also get a record, for young people, that can follow you for the rest of your life," Maldonado said.
That kind of liability, if not handled properly, could blow up in your hands.
