Sam Rayburn Drive was filled with police cars on Monday around lunchtime.
The cars were on the scene of the Austin Police Department’s second officer-involved shooting in Austin in five months.
"I heard arguing is all I heard. And not even 20 minutes later when we came back out, there were cops and they were wheeling someone out,” witness Michelle Martinez said.
Four officers were sent to this four-plex to respond to a vague 911 call. A mental health officer was the first on the scene. The shooting happened after three other officers arrived as backup.
"They made entry into the apartment and encountered an adult male in one of the rooms. This adult male was armed with a knife and one of the officers discharged his firearm striking that individual,” APD spokesman Kevin Buchman said.

Officer William Heilman fired once and hit Ernest Roberts in the cheek. It was then determined that Roberts had two knives.
"He was shot and struck by the officer and taken to Brackenridge Hospital with non-life threatening injuries,” Buchman said.
Heilman is a four-year veteran at APD. He was placed on restrictive duty until the investigation is complete, which is standard procedure anytime an officer uses deadly force.
The incident came after months of community criticism that APD uses excessive force in incidents involving minorities.
Roberts is a black man. But police say this didn't influence their thorough response at the scene.
"Our homicide team is out here, internal affairs, our training people. We're handling this just as we do any other officer-involved shooting,” Buchman said.
