Beyond the game: Softball players take to the stage
Weeks of hard work went in to preparing for the opening night of the spring musical at San Marcos Academy.
"You put together something that was really magnificent for you school, for you and for your team," student Taylor Teis said.
For some cast members of "Bye Bye Birdie,” the word 'team' is their operative word.
Half of the San Marcos Academy Softball team has been moonlighting on the stage.

"I guess it's easier to bond because you have two things in common. When you're at softball, you start talking about the play, and when you're at play you start talking about softball," student Ricki Wade said.
And sometimes the singing spills onto the field.
"We have late nights and hard practices," Teis said.
If you add in class and work, these ladies put in lots of hours.
"You make time for things, and you really learn to time manage in high school," student Kristi Allison said. "The weekends are kind of sleep catch up time for me."
The smaller school environment makes it easier for students to take take advantage of the extracurricular opportunities.

"A lot of people do a lot of different things all at the same time," student Lexi Moreno said.
That makes it important for them to come together as a team both on and off the stage.
