The University of Texas at Austin was named 15th best in the world by The Times of London newspaper.
Among U.S. public universities, only the University of California at Berkeley ranked higher than UT Austin. It came in second.
Harvard University was first in the list of the world's best 200 universities.
American institutions grabbed seven of the Top 10 places in the report.
The rankings are based on the amount of cited research by faculty, student-faculty ratio, success in attracting foreign students and academic achievements.
