George named SLC Offensive Player of the Year

FRISCO, Texas – Texas State senior quarterback Bradley George was named the Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Year and four other Bobcats were selected to the All-Southland Conference First and Second Team selections in a vote of the conference’s head coaches and sports information directors.

A senior from Canyon High School in New Braunfels, Texas, George completed 63 percent (258-of-409) of his passes for 3,121 yards and 23 touchdowns in 2009. He was seven yards shy of the school’s single season record for most passing yards, and ended his career as Texas State’s all-time career passing leader, having completed 753 of 1,277 passes (60 percent) for 9,556 yards and 91 touchdowns. He is the third Texas State player to earn SCL Offensive Player of the Year honors, joining senior from New Braunfels, Texas (Canyon), ended his career as Texas State’s all-time leading passer, having completed nearly 60 percent of his passes (753-of-1,277) for 9,556 yards and 91 touchdowns. In his senior campaign, the honorable mention all-conference selection finished just seven yards shy of the school single-season record with 3,121 yards on 63 percent aim (258-of-409). He threw 23 touchdowns.

In addition, sophomores D.J. Hall and Mishak Rivas earned All-Southland First-Team Honors as an offensive lineman and return specialists respectively. This marks the second straight season that Hall has earned All-SLC honors. He was chosen an All-SLC Second-Team performer in 2008 and earned First-Team honors as a sophomore.

This marks the second straight year the Bobcats have had a player earn All-SLC First-Team honors as a return specialist. He missed the first two games this season with an ankle injury and became Texas State’s top kickoff returner when Karrington Bush went down with a knee injury. He ended the year with 22 returns for 506 yards. Rivas also caught 26 passes for 276 yards and four touchdowns as a wide receiver for the Bobcats. Bush was named the All-SLC Second-Team selection as a return specialist in 2008.

Junior Da’Marcus Griggs was named an All-SLC Second-Team selection as a wide receiver after breaking Cameron Luke’s single season for most receptions in as season. Griggs caught 80 passes for 969 yards and eight touchdowns.

Senior defensive end Travis Houston also was named an All-SLC Second Team defensive lineman after he recorded 53 tackles during the season, including 8.5 tackles for losses of 20 yards and two quarterback sacks. Houston also intercepted one pass, broke up another and forced one fumble in 2009.

George heads a list of seven Bobcats who earned Honorable Mention All-SLC honors. The other players are: senior running back Alvin Canady, offensive linemen Calvin Gore and Alex Luna, defensive lineman Adley Eshraghipour, junior linebacker Marcus Clark and senior defensive back Will Thompson.

McNeese State quarterback Derrick Fourroux and Stephen F. Austin signal caller Jeremy Moses were named the league’s co-players of the year.

Central Arkansas’ Larry Hart and Stephen F. Austin’s Tim Knicky were named co-defensive players of the year. The freshman of the year was McNeese State defensive back Malcolm Bronson and the newcomer of the year was Stephen F. Austin defensive back Andre Banks. Stephen F. Austin head coach J.C. Harper was named the Southland’s coach of the year.
