After a number of years as the FedEx Kinko's Classic, sponsorship for the capital city's annual golf tournament changed hands in 2009 and became known as the Triton Financial Classic.
Next year, however Triton's name won't be featured as the title
sponsor because there won't be an event.
The Champions Tour has yet to release its schedule for the
upcoming season, but Triton CEO Kurt Barton confirmed to News 8 in a statement that the event will be postponed in 2010.
Barton cited the economic downturn as the reason.
"A number of sponsors did not return in 2009 and indicated
they would not be able to participate until they feel more
confident in an economic recovery."
Barton added that he hopes the Triton Financial Classic can return in the future.
Austin's own Champions Tour member Ben Crenshaw weighed in on the news.
The understandably disappointed Crenshaw said in a written statement, "I'm sorry to hear the Champions Tour event in Austin will not be played in 2010. The Hills has become one of the favorite stops for the players on the Champions Tour and I know everyone hopes that the tournament will return to the schedule in the near future."
