Austin — Texas seniors QB Colt McCoy and WR Jordan Shipley are semifinalists for the 2009 Maxwell Award, honoring the collegiate player of the year, while head coach Mack Brown is one for the 2009 George Munger Award, honoring the coach of the year, the Maxwell Football Club has announced.

	Two Longhorns named semifinalists for Maxwell Award Seniors Colt McCoy and Jordan Shipley are both in contention for the prestigious honor

McCoy and Shipley will attempt to become Texas’ fourth winner of the Maxwell Award, following QB Vince Young in 2005, RB Ricky Williams in 1998 and LB Tommy Nobis in 1965. McCoy was a finalist in 2008.

McCoy has a 40-7 record as a starter and is two victories shy of tying Georgia’s David Greene for the all-time NCAA wins record (42). During his career, McCoy has completed 1,023-of-1,450 passes (70.6%) for 11,709 yards and 100 TDs (41 INTs) for a passer rating of 155.5. His 11,709 yards are 15th on the NCAA all-time list, his 100 TD passes are tied for eighth and his 70.6-percent career completion percentage would better the NCAA record of 70.4 percent, which is held by Colt Brennan (Hawaii). McCoy’s 1,023 completions, 1,450 attempts, 70.6 completion percentage, 11,709 yards, 100 TDs and 155.5 passer rating rank first on UT’s all-time list and he is the first Longhorn to pass for more than 10,000 yards.

In combining his passing (100) and rushing (18) TDs, McCoy ranks ninth on the NCAA list and first on UT’s TD responsible for list with 118. In addition, McCoy has rushed for 1,361 yards and 18 TDs on 388 carries (3.5 ypc) and has rushed and passed for a TD in the same game 13 times during his career. McCoy is UT’s all-time leader in total offense and ranks ninth on the NCAA all-time list, having produced 13,070 yards (11,709p/1,361r) on 1,838 (7.1 ypp).

Already a semifinalist for the Davey O’Brien Award and finalist for the Campbell Award this season, McCoy has gone 198-of-275 (72.0%) for 1,977 yards and 15 TDs for a 144.6 passer rating, while rushing for another 138 yards and a TD in 2009. His 72.0-percent completion percentage ranks second nationally, his 247.1 passing yards per game is 23rd and his 264.4 total yards per game ranks 24th.

Shipley has recorded 196 receptions (No. 3 on UT’s all-time list) for 2,483 yards (No. 4 on UT’s all-time list) and 25 TDs (No. 2 on UT’s all-time list) during his 47-game career (29 starts). He has tallied nine games with at least eight catches and seven 100-yard receiving games. In addition, he has produced four games with at least 11 receptions (there are only nine on UT record). With three punt return TDs and a kickoff return for a TD (96 yards vs. Oklahoma, 2008), Shipley holds the UT record for career return TDs with four and is just the fourth Longhorn to return a kickoff and a punt for a TD during a career. His three punt return TDs are tied for first on UT’s all-time list.

A Biletnikoff Award semifinalist, Shipley has caught 64 passes for 777 yards (12.1 ypc) and five TDs this season. His 8.0 receptions per game are tied for third nationally and his 97.1 receiving yards per game rank 11th. He already has four 100-yard receiving games this season. In addition to his receiving skills, Shipley has returned 17 punts for 261 yards and two TDs. His 15.4 ypr average ranks 11th nationally, and his 134.5 all-purpose yards per game rank 34th.

Brown has guided Texas to an 8-0 start and No. 2 national ranking in 2009. The Longhorns rank in the top 11 in the NCAA in scoring offense (1st, 41.8 ppg), rushing defense (1st, 52.9 ypg), total defense (3rd, 240.8 ypg), scoring defense (11th, 13.6 ppg), kickoff returns (2nd, 31.0 ypr), turnover margin (5th, +1.25) and pass efficiency defense (5th, 95.15).

Brown is in his 12th season at Texas, and with a 123-26 (.826) record at UT, he is the architect of the nation’s best record during that stretch, which includes five 11-win seasons (2001, ’02, ’04, ’05 and ’08), a 12-win season in ’08 and a 13-win campaign in 2005. Texas is the only school in the nation that has posted at least 10 wins in each of the last eight seasons (a UT record). Brown is the lone coach nationally to lead his team to nine or more victories in 13 straight seasons. His 11 straight seasons at UT of nine or more victories are a school best.

Under Brown, the Horns have posted Top 10 finishes six times in the last eight years (2001, ’02, ’04, ’05, ’07 and ’08). Prior to his arrival, the last time UT finished in the Top 10 was 1983. In addition, Texas has played in a bowl game for a school-record 11 consecutive seasons, bettering the previous streak of nine straight from 1977-85. Brown’s personal strings, including time at North Carolina, go back even further. He has posted 19 consecutive winning seasons and taken his teams to 17 consecutive bowl games. Both of those marks are the second-longest active streaks in the nation.

The announcement of the winner of the Maxwell Award will be made during the Home Depot ESPNU College Football Awards Show on Thursday, Dec. 10. Three finalists for the award will be announced on Nov. 23, and a second round of voting will take place at that time.

The Maxwell Football Club will announce the winner of the 21st George Munger Award through a press release in December.

The formal presentation of the awards will be made at the Maxwell Football Club's Awards Dinner, to be held on Friday, March 5, 2010, at the Harrah's Entertainment Complex in Atlantic City, N.J.
