2nd-ranked UT Volleyball team suffers first loss

By: UT Media Relations

AMES, Iowa – Despite a career-best 27 kills from senior All-America outside hitter Destinee Hooker the second-ranked Texas Volleyball team fell to No. 8 Iowa State, 3-2, Wednesday night at the Hilton Coliseum. The 25-22, 22-25, 15-25, 25-20, 12-15 loss snapped the Longhorns 27-match regular-season winning streak and moved UT to 18-1 on the year and 13-1 in Big 12 play, while the Cyclones improved to 20-3 overall and 12-2 in conference action.

After leading to start the first, Texas fell behind at the 8-7 mark and did not regain the advantage until a 6-1 run paced by two kills and an ace from senior All-America outside hitter Destinee Hooker pushed the tally to 15-12. The Cyclones battled back to take an 18-17 edge before back-to-back Longhorn blocks gave UT a 21-19 lead. Two straight errors by ISU outside hitter Victoria Henson moved the margin to 23-20 and a kill by Hooker forced set point at the 24-22 mark. Iowa State’s ninth attack error closed out the set as UT earned a 25-22 victory.

Texas led early in the second, forging ahead 7-5 on a double-block by sophomore middle blocker Rachael Adams and freshman opposite hitter Bailey Webster. The Cyclones knotted the score at 11 and the teams traded points until the 15-15 mark when ISU took advantage of three UT miscues to go on a 6-1 run and take a 20-16 lead. Texas shrank the margin to 21-19 on a double-block by Adams and senior All-America setter Ashley Engle, but ISU held on to clinch the frame 25-22.

In the third, Iowa State jumped out to an early 9-3 edge and quickly widened the lead to 17-7. A 5-1 Texas rally paced by two Hooker kills shrank the ISU advantage to 18-12, but the Cyclones answered with a 3-0 run capped by a Henson kill that moved the tally to 21-12. A pair of late kills from middle blocker Debbie Stadick forced set-point at 24-15 and a kill by Henson ended the set 25-15.

The Longhorns came out of the gate strong in the fourth set and Hooker put UT on her back with three kills and a solo block that put Texas ahead, 11-5. Iowa State shrank the lead to 17-15, but a 4-0 Texas run headlined by three Hooker kills and a service ace by senior libero Heather Kisner gave the Horns a 21-15 lead. Another Hooker kill pushed the gap to 23-17 and her 11th kill of the set forced set-point at the 24-21 mark. A double-block by junior middle blocker Jennifer Doris and junior All-America outside hitter Juliann Faucette closed the set 25-21.

A 3-1 run capped by a service ace from sophomore defensive specialist Sydney Yogi helped Texas grab a 9-6 lead midway through the fifth stanza. Iowa State outside hitter Rachel Hockaday responded with three kills that helped the Cyclones knot the score at 10. A four-point run gave ISU a 13-10 lead and a kill by Henson forced set point (14-11). Middle blocker Jamie Straube’s kill ended the set and gave ISU a 3-2 victory.

Hooker headlined the Texas offense with 27 kills and 12 digs, while Faucette connected for 13 kills and added 12 digs. Adams registered a career-high 12 kills on .500 hitting and Engle tallied a career-high 54 assists in the loss.

Texas returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 4 when it travels to Missouri. First serve is set for 5 p.m. Central.
