ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Todd Sears drove in seven runs on a trio of homers and Mike Colangelo homered in his sixth consecutive game as the Albuquerque Isotopes (76-63) powered their way to an 11-6 victory over the Round Rock Express (73-66) Wednesday night at Isotopes Park.
Despite the win, the ‘Topes, who have won six straight games and nine of their last 10, remain a half-game behind the first-place Oklahoma RedHawks, who defeated New Orleans 4-3, in the American Southern Division.
Sears hit a pair of three-run shots in the third and sixth innings, respectively, before hitting a solo blast in the eighth to match a team record for most homers in a game. Colangelo, who set a team record by homering in his fifth consecutive game a night ago, hit his eighth round-tripper in his last six games while driving in 15 runs.
Colangelo, who had four hits on the night, snapped a 4-all tie in the fifth inning with an RBI single and Sears’ second home run of the game fueled a four-run seventh – aided by three Round Rock errors – that broke the game wide open. Jeff Fuchino (10-7) became the first 10-game winner in franchise history with four runs – three earned – in 5.1 innings. Roberto Giron (4-3) took the loss after allowing five runs in as many frames.
Colangelo led off the second inning with a solo home run to left that gave Albuquerque an early lead. Round Rock tied the game in the third on a base Giron, but the ‘Topes answered in the home half. Josh Wilson got things started with a walk and swiped second base before Joe Dillon singled to set the stage for Sears, who followed with a drive over the fence in left-center field that put the ‘Topes up 4-1.
Round Rock scored three times in the fifth – highlighted by a two-run triple by Chris Tremie – to tie the game at 4. But the Isotopes made the most of their opportunities in the seventh inning, doing all their damage with two outs, and the rout was on. After a pair of ground outs, Wilson reached on a fielding error by the shortstop Alex Eckelman and Dillon reached on a catching error by the pitcher Brooks Kieschnick before Sears made Round Rock pay with his second homer of the night.
The next batter, Jason Wood reached on Eckelman’s second error of the inning, stole second, and came home on a base hit by Colangelo. The Express got a run back in the seventh, but Eric Reed tripled home Larry Barnes after the stretch to cap off the scoring.
The two teams traded runs in the seventh and eighth innings.
The ‘Topes will conclude their final homestand of the regular season with the finale of a four-game series against the Round Rock Express Thursday night at 6:05. Right-handed pitcher Travis Smith (6-7, 4.32) is scheduled to start for Albuquerque against Express righty Brian Tollberg (4-2, 4.14).
