OMAHA – The Round Rock Express rallied from a 5-0 deficit for a 6-5 victory over the Omaha Royals in front of 3,536 fans.
The Royals had the 5-0 lead by the time Todd Self broke up Shawn Camp’s no-hit bid with a double to right field. One inning later – with one away in the sixth – Camp lost his shutout chance when Luke Scott belted a home run to right field, cutting Omaha’s lead to 5-1.
Mike Coolbaugh led off the seventh by blasting his 21st home run of the season to make it a 5-2 score. Brooks Conrad followed with a single. Self then sent a grounder that Royals second baseman Justin Gemoll fielded near the second base bag momentarily. However, Gemoll dropped the potential double play grounder for an error. One out later, Conrad would steal third base and then score an unearned run off Camp on Barry Wesson’s sacrifice fly, bringing the Express within two runs.
In the top of the eighth inning, Dennis Tankersley surrendered consecutive one-out doubles by Danny Klassen and Carlos Rivera to slide the Royals’ lead to a run. With one out in the ninth, Royce Huffman ripped a double down the left field line to chase Tankersley.
Omaha lefty Shane Nance (2-4) came on in relief to face the left-handed batting Scott, who crushed Nance’s 1-1 pitch over the right field wall to give Round Rock its first lead at 6-5. Until Wednesday night’s collapse, the Royals had been 37-0 this season when leading after eight innings.
Scott MacRae (1-0) got the win for Round Rock, firing three scoreless innings of relief.
The Royals had built the early lead on the strength of three home runs off Houston Astros prospect Fernando Nieve. Calvin Pickering lined his 13th home run of the season over the right-center field wall leading off the bottom of the second. Aaron Guiel opened the home half of the fourth with his 21st homer of the year and Chris Truby capped that four-run outburst with a three-run shot for his 12th round-tripper of the campaign.
However, Omaha (44-54) could not hang onto the lead and collect its third straight victory at home, which would have matched its longest home winning streak of the season.
The series finale is Thursday at 12:05 p.m.: RH Roberto Giron (3-1, 2.25) vs. RH Ryan Jensen (0-2, 5.81).
