Express fall to Royals 11-10
7/19/2005 11:49 PM
By: Round Rock Express Media Relations

OMAHA – The Round Rock Express smacked four home runs Tuesday night at Rosenblatt Stadium, including a grand slam in the top of the eighth to take a 10-8 lead over the Omaha Royals. However, Aaron Guiel’s second home run of the night – a three-run blast in the bottom of the eighth – lifted the Royals to a wild 11-10 victory in front of 2,726 fans.

Guiel greeted right-hander Will Cunnane (0-1) with his shot off the batters’ eye in straight-away center field, as Cunnane was charged with the third blown save of the night between the two clubs. Mike Coolbaugh’s grand slam to left field had welcomed Santiago Ramirez to the mound in the top of the eighth, as he blew a save opportunity with the Royals ahead 8-6 prior to the slam. Ramirez (4-5) wound up getting credit for the win, after retiring the Express in order in the ninth.

The Royals trailed 6-4 heading into the home half of the seventh. Round Rock lefty Denny McDaniel blew that save chance by giving up consecutive singles to Denny Hocking and Adrian Brown to begin the inning. Both Hocking and Brown wound up with three hits in the game. McDaniel then walked Guiel to load the bases, before Matt Diaz lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to bring the Royals within a run. Calvin Pickering then crushed McDaniel’s 2-1 delivery over the Tri-Vision sign in left-center field for a three-run homer. His 12th round-tripper of the season gave Omaha the 8-6 lead.

An error by Omaha second baseman Justin Gemoll in the top of the eighth on a grounder that would have ended the inning with the Royals still ahead by two runs wound up leading to the Express’ four-run rally, with three of those tallies being unearned. The Royals made three errors in the contest, costing a total of four unearned runs.

Guiel is the first Omaha batter to drive in five runs in a game since August 24, 2004, when Raul Casanova had five RBI in a 9-8 loss at Memphis. Guiel, who is the sixth Royals player to hit two home runs in a game this season, now has 20 round-trippers on the year. Guiel, in his sixth season with Omaha, moves one homer past Joe Vitiello into third place on the club’s career home run charts with 81. Guiel’s 67 RBI on the campaign give him 290 in his Omaha career, which is tied for fourth place with Luis de los Santos.

Omaha (44-53) is now 8-11 in games decided in the final at-bat, 16-18 in one-run decisions and 10-4 against Round Rock (48-49).

Game 3 of the series is Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. Right-hander Fernando Nieve (2-2, 3.38) will face right-hander Shawn Camp (3-6, 4.01).
