In the first three games of the Round Rock-Albuquerque series, Express hitters pounded out 21 runs on 36 hits, while winning three straight against the division leading Isotopes. The Albuquerque pitching staff had a different game plan on Tuesday night, limiting the E-Train to only three runs on five hits, while salvaging one game in the four game set, with a 4-3 win.
Express starter Tim McClaskey pitched well over his five and two thirds innings, surrendering three runs on seven hits. But, his teammates had little luck against Albuquerque starter and eventual winner Jeff Fulchino.
Fulchino gave up a lead off walk to Express 2B Royce Huffman in the third inning. Huffman scored the first run of the game on an RBI single from 3B Mike Coolbaugh that gave Round Rock the early lead.
But in the top of the fifth inning, McClaskey surrendered an RBI double to LF Mark Little and an RBI single from SS Josh Wilson and the Isotopes took a 2-1 lead.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Huffman led off with a scorching line drive homer to tie the game at two. But after that, Isotopes reliever Ben Howard shut down the Express offense with two shutout innings.
In the top of the sixth inning, RF Matt Padgett led off the inning with a solo shot onto the equipment shed in center field to make it 3-2 Isotopes. Albuquerque picked up a solo run on a two out RBI single by 3B Joe Dillon in the ninth to make it 4-2.
The Express got a two out, solo homer from pinch hitter Alex Eckelman to make it a 4-3 final.
Round Rock takes a day off on Wednesday and opens a four game weekend series against New Orleans at 7:05 p.m. on Thursday.
