On Feb. 22, 1996 Pope John Paul II issued the Apostolic Constitution Universi Dominici Gregis, on the Vacancy of the Apostolic See and the Election of the Roman Pontiff.
Within that document are rules for the funeral rites of pope. They include:

 | | The cardinals will celebrate the funeral rites for the repose of the pope’s soul for nine consecutive days. |
 | | If the pope is buried inside the Vatican Basilica two different documents must be drawn up to prove it. |
 | | No one is permitted to photograph or film the pope on his sickbed or after death, or to record his words for subsequent distribution. If after the Pope's death anyone should wish to take photographs of him for documentary purposes, they must be granted permission; and then the pope can only be photographed if he is dressed in pontifical vestments. |
 | | Between the time of the burial and election of a new pope, no one is allowed to live in the papal private apartment. |
