VATICAN CITY -- Despite his health problems, Pope John Paul wrapped up a week of ceremonies surrounding the 25th anniversary of his election.
On Wednesday, he gave his 30 new cardinals their rings, which symbolize their link to the church and the pope. The solemn ceremony was held inside St. Peter's Basilica because of a steady rain.
In what has apparently become the new routine for the ailing pontiff, John Paul said only a few prayers, leaving his homily and celebration of the Mass to others. He struggled to pronounce his words, but he looked attentive as he followed the Mass.
