VATICAN CITY -- Pope John Paul II has presided over the first of several ceremonies ahead of him.
The 83-year-old pontiff gave the Church three new saints at Sunday's canonization ceremony in Saint Peter's square.
Sunday's ceremony drew about 30,000 people -- many in the crowd cheered when Pope John Paul was brought to the center of the steps of Saint Peter's Basilica.
This month's packed schedule includes celebrations for the 25th anniversary of Pope John Paul's election to the papacy.
