Texas Parks & Wildlife Dept. said they were able to survey the damages Sunday.

A major search and rescue operation is underway on Highway 124, about 30 miles east of Houston, heading out to the Bolivar Peninsula.

The Texas Parks & Wildlife Dept. said they were able to survey the damages Sunday. There are several communities on the peninsula, one of which was Gilchrist. Officials said it was decimated by Hurricane Ike.

On Monday, several air boats were taking food and supplies to the people who are still out on the island. Up to 120 people are believed to be still on the island.
